Starting a new food business

If you are planning to open a new food business or if there are any changes in activities of your food business, such as a new owner, please complete a food registration form:

When we receive your completed registration form we will send you a letter explaining the next steps we will take. There are a number of things that you need to consider when running a food business and it is very important to get things right at the start, because this will make it much easier for you to run your business well in the future.

 Food hygiene inspections

  • All food businesses in the area are visited on a regular basis - restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, corner shops, warehouses and manufacturers. 
  • The frequency of visits depends on the nature of the business and the condition of the premises. 
  • These inspections are carried out without an appointment so that officers can get a true picture of what happens on a day to day basis. Officers are out and about in the area during the day, in the evenings and at weekends. 
  • A wide range of options are available to deal with any problems found. These range from just giving advice to prosecution.
