Southbridge development purchase to be discussed by Cabinet
Northampton Borough Council’s Cabinet is set to discuss a proposal to increase the supply of affordable housing by purchasing an apartment block in Southbridge.
If the purchase of 85-89 Lion Court is given the go-ahead, the Council will let the 44 homes at affordable rents to eligible households on the Housing Register.
Construction of the apartment block is due to be completed in February 2021.
Cllr Stephen Hibbert, Cabinet Member for housing and wellbeing, said: “We are always looking for opportunities to increase our supply of permanent affordable rented homes and this particular development fits the bill perfectly.
“If this purchase of 85-89 Lion Court goes ahead, we will also be able to reduce our use of temporary accommodation in Northampton significantly.”
Northampton Partnership Homes (NPH) has been negotiating the purchase of the development – consisting of 15 one-bedroom apartments, 28 two-bedroom apartments and one three-bedroom apartment – on the Council’s behalf.
It is proposed that the purchase is funded through the Council’s Housing Revenue Account and that NPH will let and manage the new council homes.
Cabinet will discuss the proposal at its virtual meeting on Wednesday 16 December at 6pm. Full details on the proposals can be found online at www.northampton.gov.uk/decembercabinet
