Keeping you on Santa's "Nice" recycling list this Christmas

Published: Friday, 04 December 2020

With the festive season officially in full swing, Northampton Borough Council and Veolia are reminding residents to give their recycling bins a good stuffing this Christmas.

If Santa was typing up a list of nice recyclables to have a recycling bin or box, he’d look for seasonal items such as Christmas cards (no foil or glitter), cardboard, wrapping paper (not foil paper), sweet tins and drinks bottles, rather than your black bins or green sacks.

Large cardboard should be broken up into manageable pieces and placed in your recycling bins or under your recycling boxes. Don’t be a Grinch help with any extra recycling during the Christmas period, additional recyclable items can be presented alongside your boxes and bins in clear sacks or in additional boxes.

There are some indications that the jolly, white-bearded one himself recycles plate scrapings and vegetable peelings in his food caddy, even leftover food can be frozen for use on another day. Cool any leftovers at room temperature, then cover them and ensure that they go in the fridge or freezer within one-two hours.

He would also recommend that you can use previously cooked and frozen turkey to keep that festive atmosphere by making a new meal, such as a turkey curry. This new meal can be frozen too, but make sure you only reheat it once. When you come to use frozen leftovers, make sure you defrost them thoroughly, ideally in the fridge overnight. If this isn’t possible, use a microwave on the defrost setting. Always reheat leftovers until steaming hot. More information on freezing leftovers, including recipe ideas, can be found here.

Recycling collections elves will be collecting real Christmas trees on your scheduled recycling collection day, between 11 January and 22 January. Trees should be placed next to your blue-lidded bins. Residents on sack collection rounds can present their trees beside their recycling boxes and green sacks on their collection day.

Whilst the additional recycling and Christmas tree collections take place, garden waste collections will be suspended from 28 December until 8 January.

The waste and recycling collections elves will be taking a short break on Christmas Day. Households who usually have their waste and recycling collected on a Friday will have their collections moved temporarily to Saturday, 26 December. All other collections stay the same.

Cllr Mike Hallam, Cabinet member for Environment, said: “With everything happening in the lead up to Christmas, recycling may not be top-of-mind for people, but we’ve certainly got an opportunity to up our recycling game this year and make sure we’re remaining on  Santa's "Nice" recycling list."

Keith Powell, Veolia Contract Manager, said: “Our crews see lots of little recyclers during their daily rounds, all of which have enthusiastically put out their recycling bins for collection every week. We want to ensure that Santa knows how sustainable Northampton Borough children are, so they can be added to the nice recyclers list this year and we wish everyone in Northampton Borough a safe and Merry Christmas.”
