Almost £35 million paid out in business grants to Northampton businesses
Northampton Borough Council paid almost £35 million in government grant funding to businesses impacted by the coronavirus outbreak.
Since the Government announced the grant schemes providing financial assistance to coronavirus-gripped businesses, Northampton Borough Council has supported more than 2,900 businesses with payments exceeding £34,875 million.
The grant payments were administered through three schemes: the Small Business Grant Fund, the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Fund for businesses with rateable value of up to £15,000 or up to £51,000 and the Discretionary Fund.
The Council has now paid out its final Discretionary grants allocating over £1.7 million worth of Discretionary grant funding to 259 eligible businesses that have been impacted by COVID-19 but were not eligible under the Small Business Grant Funding or the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure schemes.
Councillor Brandon Eldred, Cabinet member for finance, said: “I want to thank our businesses for their patience and the team administering the grant schemes for their continuous efforts and hard work in distributing these grants and reducing the impact of this global pandemic on everyone who lives and works in Northampton.
“We were delighted to support eligible businesses across all settings including those who have fallen through the cracks and have missed out on benefiting from other schemes together with eligible manufacturers and warehouses.”
Cllr Tim Hadland, Cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise, said: “Northampton’s independent businesses make an enormous contribution to both the local economy and the unique character of our town centre this is why it’s vital that we do everything we can to support our local businesses so they can get through these unprecedented times.
“We are in this together and only with the support of local people, we will be able to come out of this pandemic stronger, wiser and prouder of our local businesses and heroes who supported our residents throughout the pandemic.
“I want to thank our businesses across town for their efforts in making their premises Covid-secure to keep their workers and customers safe and I encourage customers to play their part, behave responsibly and respect social-distancing rules while enjoying our shop, pubs and restaurants.”
