Northampton residents are invited to take part in a virtual ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide on Saturday, 11 July.

The commemoration will take place on the Mayor’s Facebook page and on Northampton Borough Council’s YouTube channel at 11am with a speech from the Mayor, Councillor Brian Sargeant, a flag-raising and a candle lighting ceremony.

Videos and further information about the massacre in Srebrenica along with details about the charities that support the survivors will be also be shared on the day, aiming to commemorate and educate communities on the worst atrocity that took on European soil since the Second World War.

Councillor Brian Sargeant, said: “I am proud to be raising the Remember Srebrenica flag on behalf of Northampton and hope it will raise public awareness of this very important international day of commemoration.

“I hope as many people as possible will join myself and members of Northampton Borough Council virtually to remember the victims of this atrocity, and to do all we can individually and collectively to show there is no place for hate in our society.”
