Celebrating Armed Forces Day the virtual way

Published: Thursday, 25 June 2020

Virtual celebrations will mark this year’s Armed Forces Day in Northampton, on Saturday, 27 June, in place of the traditional town centre parade and associated activities.

A programme of videos will play on the Mayor’s Facebook page and on Northampton Borough Council’s YouTube channel throughout the morning, beginning at 10am with a welcome speech from the Mayor, Councillor Brian Sargeant.

This will be followed with speeches from Councillors, local dignitaries, and military representatives, including the Lord Lieutenant James Saunders-Watson, the High Sheriff Paul Parsons, the Lieutenant Colonel Jane Chappell, Chairman of the Reserve Forces and Cadet Association and Phil York from the Royal British Legion.

The annual flag raising will take place at 10.45am, then at 11am, further videos showing the Sea Cadets, the Army Cadets, and others will play.

Viewers can then enjoy a selection of photos taken at last year’s parade, shared by freelance photographer Kirsty Edmondson, along with photos from the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Anglian Regiment.

Councillor Sargeant, the Mayor of Northampton, said: “The annual parade of marching troops, veterans and reserves has become an important fixture in the town’s events calendar, and it is also a day to honour the invaluable work that our armed forces do both here in the UK and overseas.

“In the absence of a live event this year, we have a wealth of contributors who have created some wonderful videos for us to share on my Facebook page and on YouTube. We hope you can tune in and watch, so we can continue to show just how proud we are of all our military personnel, both past and present.”

The full programme can be found on our event page.
