The Guildhall to host International Women’s Day celebrations

Families are invited to an exciting community event celebrating International Women’s Day at the Guildhall on Saturday 7 March.

Opening at 11am, the day’s programme will highlight this year’s theme #eachforequal with a range of activities such as stage performances, information stalls, painting in virtual reality, trailblazers quiz and virtual reality therapies.

Families will be entertained throughout the day with lively singing and dance performances from groups including Northampton Rock Choir and Northampton Bharatnatyam.

Attendees can also get involved in the #TechWomenNN trailblazers interactive online quiz organised by Digital Northampton between 11.30am -2pm where they can find out about global female pioneers past and present. As part of the quiz trail attendees will be visiting various locations around the town centre, meet local inspiring women in tech and try exciting technology including virtual reality therapy -swimming with dolphins and painting in virtual reality!

Councillor Anna King, Cabinet member for community engagement and safety, said: “International Women’s Day celebrates achievements of women across the globe and we’re so pleased to be marking it again in Northampton, with a free family event in the Guildhall.

“There will be plenty to interest everyone, from entertainment to networking, virtual reality sessions and information about what’s going on in our town throughout the year. Come along and get involved.”

Children under the age of eight will have the opportunity to have a fun introduction to being a detective through “The Junior Crime Scene” sessions run by Northamptonshire Police.

Refreshments will be provided by Elsie’s Café, Northampton’s real junk food project in the Court Room.

In addition, BBC Radio Northampton presenter, Wayne Bavin, will be on stage to announce this year’s Inspirational Woman Award winner at 2pm.
