Celebrate Chinese New Year in Northampton

Published: Monday, 06 January 2020

Traditional Chinese New Year celebrations will take place at the Old Savoy theatre on Sunday, 26 January, to welcome in the year of the rat.

A range of vibrant performances, including circus acts, dancing and music, are set to take to the stage between noon and 3pm, with stalls selling authentic Chinese trinkets and products open from 11am.

The free event, organised by the Northamptonshire Chinese Society, the Deco Theatre and Northampton Borough Council, will also feature a giant lucky cat and a Chinese dragon, created by arts company Festive Road.

A martial arts display, fire breathing contortionists and a traditional mask changing artist will be among the entertainment highlights, along with a Chinese magician and an acrobatic duo.

Councillor Anna King, Cabinet member for community engagement and safety, said: “We’re delighted to be working with The Northamptonshire Chinese Society and The Deco Theatre once again to host Chinese New Year celebrations.

“Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy this colourful and exciting display of Chinese culture, which is suitable for all the family.”
