Council committee looking for new member

Published: Thursday, 10 October 2019

An opportunity has arisen for a proactive individual to join Northampton Borough Council's Standards Committee.

The Committee is looking to sign up a new independent member for the 18 months to two years, to help them promote and maintain high standards of conduct by elected and co-opted councillors.

As part of the Standards Committee, the individual would gain valuable experience of a local government organisation and the ethical framework within which it operates.

Applicants will get the chance to use their keen analytical skills to help update the Council’s whistleblowing policy, develop a training programme for councillors, review the code of conduct and improve procedures for registering areas of interest, gifts and hospitality.

In addition, they will have the opportunity to work with the Council’s monitoring officer to provide objective and impartial views on complaints about councillor behaviour.

Anyone applying to be an independent member of the Committee, should not have any connection to a political party, councillors, parish councillors within the borough or Council staff.

Applicants will need to be available to attend quarterly committee meetings at the Guildhall as well as any ad hoc meetings, needed to deal with case work.

If appointed to the Committee, they will be entitled to an annual allowance which is currently £525.40.

For more information about the role or to apply here or contact Tracy Tiff on 01604 837408.

The closing date for applications is noon on 15 November 2019. Interviews will be held on 26 November  from 5pm at the Guildhall.
