A chance to meet the experts repairing Eleanor Cross

Published: Tuesday, 21 May 2019

Experts commissioned to repair the Eleanor Cross will speak during a presentation at the London Road site on Thursday, 30 May, to discuss the works taking place and demonstrate the materials being use

Northampton Borough Council is organising the two presentations, which will run at 2pm and 3pm, and last for approximately 45 minutes, with a limited number of places on offer.

A representative from Skillington Workshop Ltd will talk about the overall project and the repair principles which are being applied, along with information and examples about how the stonework has weathered over time.

Some of the materials used in the conservation work will be on show, as well as details about how the conservators are carrying out lime mortar repairs to the Cross.

Skillington Workshop began conservation work on the Cross at the beginning of April, with works overseen by specialist consultants Acanthus Clews.

Cllr Tim Hadland, Cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise, said: “We’re really pleased that Skillington Workshop are making good progress on the repair works and because there has been so much interest and concern about the cross, we wanted to offer this opportunity for the public to meet the experts involved.

“This exciting project will see the sensitive and cautious repair of this beautiful and important monument, preserving it for future generations.”

Historic England (HE) has been consulted throughout the project and last year added the monument to its Buildings at Risk register which enabled the Council to apply for funding. HE has agreed to cover half of the project costs.

The Cross, situated at the southern end of London Road close to Delapré Wood, was commissioned by Edward I between 1291 and 1294. Only three of twelve original monuments remain, and each marked one of the nightly resting places of the funeral procession between Harby and London, for the King’s wife, Queen Eleanor of Castile.

Conservation and repairs will be complete before the winter.

Places are offered on a first come first serve basis, and must be booked through Eventbrite  https://crosspresentation.eventbrite.co.uk
