Recycled bedding plants available for community projects

Local community groups are being offered the chance to boost their displays with recycled bedding plants from across Northampton borough.

Winter bedding plants are due to be replaced with summer blooms, across Northampton Borough Council owned parks and communal areas later this month.

Rather than throwing away the winter plants, any community groups that need extra plants for their projects can snap up a free supply. Groups that are welcome to apply for the recycled plants include park friends groups, resident associations and care homes.

Recycled plants on offer include polyanthus and bellis, and will be given to groups on a first come first served basis.

Councillor Mike Hallam, Cabinet member for environment, said: “We will shortly be updating the Borough Council’s flower displays with summer plants, ready for the Bloom competition later this year. We don’t want our winter bedding plants to go to waste however, and so we’re keen to get our local community groups replanting them in their displays, giving their local area a green and floral boost.”

Nicola Clarke, idverde’s Community Engagement Officer, said “idverde are delighted to be able to assist dedicated volunteers improve their parks and open spaces for the benefit of local communities.”
