Community event to highlight youth services in Blackthorn

Published: Wednesday, 10 April 2019

A community event in Blackthorn on Tuesday 16 April aims to raise awareness of, and engage young people in, the local youth services in the area.

The event, which is being organised by Northampton Borough Council and Free2Talk, will take place at Blackthorn Community Centre between 3pm and 7pm, and young people are being encouraged to drop-in to find out more about the youth club, mentoring support and new football coaching scheme.

As well as finding out more about the services, young people will be able to get involved in some fun activities at the community centre, including art and music projects and street sports on the multi-use games area with Northampton Leisure Trust.

Local residents of all ages can also come along to speak to Northampton Partnership Homes, the Neighbourhood Police Team and Veolia to get updates on issues in their area. They will even get the opportunity to try their hand at Boccia (a form of bowls) with Age UK Northamptonshire from 4.30pm.

Neighbourhood wardens will also be on site, chatting to residents, cutting back the bushes and tidying up the area between Waingrove and the school.

Councillor Anna King, Cabinet member for community engagement and safety, said: “Blackthorn has some great, well-established youth services which we have recently been able to develop and expand, with a grant from Central Government’s Trusted Relationship Fund in order that we can engage and support even more young people.

“The community event on 16 April will help us to raise awareness of the services as well as launch the fantastic new football coaching scheme, which we hope lots of young people will sign up to.”

Jodie Low, Director, Youth and Community Worker for Free2Talk, said: “The Days of Action are so important for our communities to get together and make the changes they want to see. It's great for Free 2 Talk to be able to support young people as part of this. We've been working consistently in Blackthorn alongside Growing Together for over seven years and seen young people grow and develop into adults. Our youth groups run on Mondays for 8-11 year olds at 4.30pm and 12-18 year olds from 6.30pm. The Day of Action will give the community a chance to see what we do, meet the team and celebrate what young people have achieved so far. Our Youth Workers now offer individual support in this community which young people have been calling for and we have been able to do alongside support from the Borough Council’s Community Safety Team.”
