Be proud of your town – become a Street Champion
Residents are being encouraged to show pride in the town by signing up to a new Street Champions Scheme, which is being launched by Northampton Borough Council and Veolia on Thursday 4 April.
The Street Champions Scheme aims to improve the cleanliness of the town’s streets, open spaces and communal land by encouraging residents to volunteer time to help litter pick and promote responsible behaviour around litter.
No formal commitment is needed when signing up to become a Street Champion volunteer, people can give as much or as little time as they like, either as an individual or by forming a group with like-minded friends and neighbours.
Volunteers can keep their street or local park clean during a monthly organised litter pick, as they walk to work, as they walk the dog or just anytime they get the urge to make a difference in their community!
All volunteers will receive training and on-going support as well as a welcome kit that includes a litter picker, gloves, rubbish sacks, a sack hoop, a high-vis jacket and a window sticker.
Councillor Mike Hallam, Cabinet member for environment, said: “Our partnership with Veolia has already seen great improvements in the cleanliness of the town as well as the waste and recycling services. There is still more to do however, to get the town up to the standard we all want and deserve, and it’s something we can all contribute to by forming good habits.
“There are already many proactive groups in the town, who do an absolutely fantastic job keeping our streets and parks clean with regular litter picks, and we hope that the launch of the Street Champions scheme, will help to build on this work and install a wider a sense of pride in Northampton by encouraging more people to take positive actions to improve their local areas.”
Keith MC Gurk, Regional Director for Veolia, said: “We are impressed by the work volunteer groups are already doing by organising regular litter-picks around Northampton Borough. The Street Champion scheme will enable us to support them with equipment and training and encourage even more residents to volunteer. Great British Spring Clean is the perfect opportunity to get involved and help keep Northampton’s streets tidy.”
