Traditional Chinese entertainment to welcome in the Year of the Pig
Chinese dance, face mask changing and lion dancing are just a few of the highlights visitors can expect at this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations.
Taking place at The Deco Theatre on Sunday 10 February between 12pm and 3pm, attendees can expect an afternoon packed-full of traditional entertainment, activities and food.
The celebrations, which are annually organised by The Northamptonshire Chinese Society and Northampton Borough Council, are free for people to attend. A charge, however, is payable on the doors, if attendees wish to enjoy authentic Chinese food and drink as they watch the entertainment.
In addition, people will get the chance to pose with a giant lucky cat and a Chinese Dragon, which were commissioned by the Borough Council and created by Festive Road.
Councillor Anna King, Cabinet member for community engagement and safety, said: “We’re really excited to be working with The Northamptonshire Chinese Society and The Deco Theatre to host this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations.
“The event will not only showcase some great Chinese traditions but will also highlight the strong community spirit we have in town. We looking forward to welcoming people from all communities and faiths to this fantastic celebration.”
Mr HT Low, chairman of The Northamptonshire Chinese Society, said: “Northampton has embraced each of our Chinese New Year events with open arms and we look forward to welcoming you all again to the Year of the Pig celebrations, which we hope will be bigger and better this year.
“The Deco Theatre is the perfect location for showcasing our spectacular Chinese dances, face mask changing magician and professional lion dancing. Everyone is welcome, so please come along and find out more about our Chinese culture.”
Attendees are encouraged to post their Lucky Cat selfies to @LoveNorthampton using the hashtag #LoveNorthampton for a chance to win a lucky prize.
