Daytime shelter provided for rough sleepers during cold snap

Published: Tuesday, 27 February 2018

As a result of the cold daytime temperatures and snowy conditions, additional arrangements are now in place to ensure that rough sleepers have access to shelter during the day and early evening.

These arrangements are in place for today, Wednesday and Thursday as part of the Council's Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP). A decision about Friday and Saturday will be made in due course.

Street outreach workers were patrolling the streets from 6.00am on Tuesday to provide this information to anyone they found sleeping rough.

Details of the daytime shelter are as follows:
The Hope Centre will be open from 8.30am - 1.00pm (as normal)
The Hope Centre will be open from 2.00pm - 6.00pm (NEW)
The Nightshelter will be open from 6.00pm - 9.00pm (NEW)
The Nightshelter will be open from 9.00pm - 9.00am (as normal)
SWEP will operate from the Hope Centre from 9.00pm - 7.45am (as normal)

During the hours of 2.00pm and 9.00pm, both the Hope Centre and the Nightshelter will be open to all rough sleepers and SWEP / Nightshelter guests and, at 9.00pm, anyone not staying at the Nightshelter will leave and move to SWEP.

This provision is being made in addition to the Borough Council's usual SWEP arrangements for overnight accommodation.
