Step into history with new Northampton Castle app
A new virtual reality app that allows you to take a look around Northampton as it once was will launch this Halloween.
Northampton Borough Council and the Friends of Northampton Castle collaborated to develop the app designed to highlight the history of the Castle and its place in Northampton’s past.
The app allows you to step inside the Castle walls to enjoy a whole host of games and educational activities and meet a few ghosts along the way. Set in the year 1222, the app allows people to watch tournament preparations unfold through the eyes of Jack, the miller’s son. Using a virtual reality headset, players can navigate through the site of Northampton Castle to learn more about what life was like and the historical figures who stayed there.
Councillor Tim Hadland, cabinet member for regeneration, enterprise and planning, said: “This is a fun and quirky way of encouraging people to immerse themselves in Northampton’s rich history and is a great way to bring learning to life.
“Developed specifically to highlight the fascinating history of the castle, there are a range of games suitable for the whole family which we hope will inspire people to find out more.”
Chair of Friends of Northampton Castle, Dr Marie Dickie, OBE, said: “The Friends of Northampton Castle have always said that Northampton's Past should be part of its Future.
“Using this fascinating new technology to highlight the grandeur of our lost Castle is a great contribution to that.”
People will get their first chance to try out the new app as part of the Looking Glass Theatre’s Halloween ghost tours taking place on 28, 29 and 31 October, where virtual reality headsets will be available.
To try it for yourself download Northampton Castle VR for Cardboard 2.0 from Google Play or the app store.
