Financial support available to help with housing costs

Published: Monday, 20 February 2017

People on low incomes could be eligible for further help with their housing costs through the Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP) scheme.

The DHP scheme is available for people who are receiving, or have been receiving, housing benefit but need extra financial support to pay the shortfall on their rent.

Northampton Borough Council receives a yearly DHP allocation from central Government and the council is currently considering awards up to the end of March 2017.

To be eligible to make a DHP claim you must be receiving Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit.

Each case will be considered on its own merits and council staff will look at the individual circumstances of each claim to consider all other options available before deciding whether to award a DHP and at what level. Requests are considered within 14 days.
