Public consultation on greener measures for Northampton cabs

Published: Friday, 25 November 2016

Northampton residents are being asked to share their views on new proposals to reduce the environmental impact and improve the condition of the town’s taxi and private hire car services.

The consultation encompasses two proposals to introduce an age limit for vehicles seeking licenses as well as improve emissions standards.

Councillor Anna King, Northampton Borough Council’s cabinet member for community engagement and safety, said: “We are committed to improving the air quality in Northampton and this proposed emissions policy is just one of the long-term plans we’re considering to tackle the issue. We also want to ensure that all of the taxis and private hire vehicles in town are well-maintained and reflect the high standards that we expect to see. We believe that introducing a maximum age limit on how old a vehicle can be when a new license application is submitted is a good way to help ensure those standards are met.

“We’re working closely with the local taxi and private hire businesses but are also keen to hear what local residents think of these suggestions as well. All of your feedback will be considered so I encourage anyone with a view on the matter to get in touch through one of our online surveys.”

The consultation will be open until 16 February 2017.
