Keen gardeners from schools, business and streets and houses right across Northampton will be honoured for their efforts at a ceremony at the Guildhall this Thursday (October 13).

There were more than 70 entries into the Northampton in Bloom awards, which contributes to the Borough’s entry in the East Midlands in Bloom competition. On Thursday, the efforts of these handy horticulturalists will be celebrated as they are acknowledged for their achievements. Among the record number of participants this year, are:

  • 11 schools
  • 30 community groups and residents’ associations
  • 10 pubs or businesses
  • 18 gardens at private homes

As well as parish councils and allotment associations.

East Midlands in Bloom judge Doug Stacey will also be presenting awards won in the regional competition, in which Northampton again won a silver-gilt award, along with the Judge’s Award for Spreading the Word across the Entire City and the East Midlands in Bloom Committee Award for Making the Whole City Bloom.

Also presenting awards are Cllr Brian Oldham of the Northampton Bloom Committee, Cllr Christopher Malpas, Mayor of Northampton and Johnnie Amos, gardening expert from BBC Northampton.

Cllr Mary Markham, Leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: “Bloom just keeps getting better and better. We had more entries than ever this year and for me, the highlight was the East Midlands judge’s decision that we had made the whole of Northampton bloom. It’s the icing on the cake and a tribute to the efforts of everyone who took part. I will be taking the opportunity to extend my thanks to them all – and to our sponsors – for the efforts they have made to improve the quality of life in Northampton.”

The competition was sponsored by K & J Hird; Moulton College; Enterprise; Wooden Supplies; Stagecoach; Chelton Brown; Tesco; Aspers; The Abington; Seckingtons; Workbridge; Tangerine Red Ends The ceremony is taking place at the Guildhall from 6pm on Thursday 13 October.
