A new dedicated hotline has been set up to help households on sack collections report any issues concerning neighbours who are not complying with Northampton’s two green sack policy.

Northampton Borough Council’s waste contractor Enterprise, now owned by Amey, has been operating a two green sack policy only since September 2013.  Until the beginning of this month crews took a relatively relaxed approach to collecting sacks because they understood householders would need a period of adjustment.  They are now, however, firmly enforcing the policy which means that only waste correctly presented in two green sacks will be collected.

Whilst most households are complying with the policy, there are some that are not.  Extra crews are being sent to clear the streets of uncollected sacks and action is being taken to educate and warn offenders that they run the risk of being fined if they do not comply with the two green sack policy.  Supplies of green sacks are also being given to households that have run out so that they can present their rubbish correctly.

Councillor Mary Markham, leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: “The government’s target is for all local authorities to be recycling 50 per cent of their waste by 2020.  Our current target is 48 per cent, but despite making it easier for people to recycle and increasing the types of recycling we collect, we are only achieving around 44 per cent.  More has got to be done, and that includes enforcing the two green sack policy.

“We are doing all we can to help people comply with the policy, but communities need to help us deal with those householders who aren’t complying.  The hotline has been set up to provide people with a direct line to report problems in their neighbourhoods.

“Please call us if someone near you is putting out their rubbish incorrectly – on the wrong day or in the wrong sacks.   We will do our bit, but I urge people to help us by calling the hotline and telling us what’s happening and who is doing it.  A quick call is all that is needed and we will take it from there.”

The dedicated hotline to report people presenting their waste sacks incorrectly is (01604) 838858.  Lines are open 9am to 5pm weekdays and a quick call is all that is needed.
