Northampton Borough Council is planning a three-day live music event at Delapre Abbey in July 2013.

The music event would aim for a national profile, with live outdoor concerts in the Abbey grounds from big name artists each July for the next three years.

The Borough Council is planning events similar to those put on by the Forestry Commission, which has organised concerts in outdoor venues such as Cannock Chase featuring Will Young and Plan B.

The plan is to present top acts with the widest possible appeal across the three days to attract a broad audience, putting Delapre Abbey on the map and bringing visitors to the town.

Councillor David Mackintosh, Leader of Northampton Borough Council, said that the three-day event would help raise Northampton’s reputation.

“We provided some great events this year and I am confident that we could put on a stunning show that would be the centrepiece of the 2013 events calendar.  We are working hard to raise the national profile of Northampton, and draw attention to the exciting things that are going on here - both in terms of culture and in business.

“I’m really excited by the potential of this event and I hope that very soon, we will be able to announce that some big names are on the way next summer.”

Councillor Brandon Eldred, Cabinet Member for Community Engagement said that the event would help meet the aim of making Borough Council events financially self-sufficient.

He said: “We have been able to put on a great programme this year and we are planning for a great Christmas but we always need to consider the affordability of events.  This would enable us to put on something really ambitious that’s going to draw in people from across the country but that pays for itself.”
