Museums

This bronze Buddha is part of our fine art collection. This sculpture has been on display at Abington Park Museum for a long period of time and many visitors have fond memories of this artwork perhaps because it has a very strong visual impact. Over many years Abington has displayed many aspects of the museums collection including stunning works like this one.

The sculpture was donated in 1944 as part of the Manfield bequest. Sir Philip Manfield was a significant shoe factory owner and the business successfully passed to his sons. The Manfield family were philanthropic supporting various causes in Northampton. They helped develop the early museum through donations of many objects including significant pieces of the decorative art collection.

The Buddha, also known as Siddhattha Gotama or Siddhārtha Gautama, was a philosopher, mendicant, meditator, spiritual teacher, and religious leader who lived in ancient India 400-300 BCE. He is revered as the founder of the world religion of Buddhism.
