What happens if you don't pay your Business Rates?

You can pay your Business Rates online by clicking on the link below and selecting "Business Rates" from the list.

Pay your business rates online

Business Rates are payable by ten or twelve monthly instalments due on the first day of each month and payments should be on your account by that date.

If you do not pay an instalment at the correct time, you will receive a reminder.

If you don’t pay the amount on the reminder within seven days, you will lose the right to pay by instalments and the full amount for the year will be come due and payable immediately.

If you do not pay the full balance, you will be sent a Summons to appear in the Magistrates Court for non-payment. At this point you will incur costs which must be paid in addition to the outstanding balance of your Business Rates.

If you have any sort of query regarding the Summons, or you think that it has been issued incorrectly, please contact us immediately.

If you have received a Summons and wish to attend the court hearing you MUST contact the Recovery Department first to arrange an appointment to appear.
ctaxrecovery@northampton.gov.uk or telephone the Council on 01604 837150.
Under the current COVID-19 restrictions you will not be allowed to enter the court building unless you have pre-booked a time slot with the Council first.  This is a safety precaution for you and other court users.

Failure to pay the Summons will result in the council making application to the court for a liability order.

The liability order allows us to take any one of the following actions:

  1. Start insolvency proceedings against you;
  2. Employ enforcement agents to seize goods to pay for your debt;
  3. Make an application for your committal to prison for a maximum of 3 months (if the enforcement agent is unable to recover the debt).

If you are not able to pay in full, you should contact us immediately, as we may agree an arrangement for you to pay what you owe.
