Update on May 2020 elections

The Government announced on Friday 13 March 2020 that the local elections scheduled for 7 May 2020 have been postponed for a year until May 2021, due to the current and emerging situation around COVID-19.

We understand that the necessary legislation will be approved imminently and this page will be updated when we have more information.

Information about elections

On 7 May this year residents in Daventry District, Northampton Borough and South Northamptonshire will be able to vote for the councillors who will serve on the new West Northamptonshire unitary council which will be created on 1 April 2021.

A total of 93 councillors will be elected for West Northamptonshire - three seats for each of the 31 electoral wards which are based on similar geographical areas to the existing county council division areas.

The new councillors will serve for five years, until the next set of elections in 2025. The new West Northamptonshire Council will legally become responsible for the delivery of local services on 1st April 2021, up until that date (ie, from the date of the 2020 election) the newly elected councillors will serve on a shadow authority that will be responsible for setting up the new council so that it is ready to be operational from 1st April 2021.
