Conservation areas are specially designated for protection and enhancement, following consultation with local residents and property owners, because of their distinctive character and appearance.

Conservation area appraisals and new conservation areas
We are required periodically to re-evaluate our conservation areas, and have embarked on a programme of reviewing all of the conservation areas in Northampton. Consultion on a review of St Giles Conservation Area is being undertaken between 11 November and 23 December (5pm) 2019. For details please see:

Permission for development
In conservation areas, planning controls are extended to give greater protection to preserve the character and appearance of the area. We have also further removed permitted development rights through the adoption of Article 4 directions within Abington Park, Barrack Road, Billing Road, Derngate, Kingsley and St Giles conservation areas.
