Kingsthorpe High Street and Manor Road Conservation Area consultation 2016
A conservation area is "an area of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance" (Listed Buildings Act, 1990).
Kingsthorpe has two Conservation Areas - the area surrounding The Green and St John the Baptist Parish Church, designated in 1976, and the area including High Street and Manor Road, designated in 1987.
Conservation Area appraisals
The council has produced and is consulting on appraisal and management plans for each of the Conservation Areas. These aim to identify the features which contribute to the special character and appearance and justify conservation area status and how it can be preserved and enhanced.
What is the special character of High Street/Manor Road Conservation Area?
The appraisal identifies several features which contribute to the distinct character of the High Street and Manor Road Conservation Area.
- Narrow streets with connecting footpaths, reflecting the medieval origins of the area
- Buildings close together, the majority in linear terraces at the back of the pavement, resulting in an intimate, enclosed character
- A divergence of building styles and ages, with 18th & 19th century stone cottages alongside 20th century brick houses
- Varying eaves and ridge heights, building plot sizes and use of a variety of building materials including sandstone, red brick and render creating visual interest
The Conservation Area boundary
It is proposed that the two Conservation Areas in Kingsthorpe remain separate on account of their distinct character and appearance. It is not proposed to alter the boundary of the Manor Road/High Street Conservation Area.
Public consultation: 8th November to 20th December 2016
