Refuse sack FAQs
What is happening?
From week commencing 16 September 2013 only two GREEN sacks of household waste will be collected from your home each week.
Why are the changes being made?
Sending waste to landfill is environmentally unfriendly and costs millions of pounds each year.
Why introduce a specific-coloured sack?
To help ensure that the two sack limit is adhered to and easily visible to the collection crews.
What if I run out of sacks? Will I be issued with more?
No. We will issue you with GREEN sacks twice a year. It will be your responsibility to ensure that you do not use more than two sacks per week.
What if I have more waste than I can fit into the GREEN sacks even after I recycle?
Firstly, contact Northampton Borough Council to see if there’s anything else you can recycle. If not, you will either need to hold onto your waste until the next week or take it to the household recycling centre.
What if I have 6 or more in my family?
If you have 6 or more in your family, then you can request additional green sacks. Additional capacity is subject to annual review.
How can I apply for additional sacks?
You can make your request on 0300 330 7000 and an operational team member will ring back to assess your situation; this may warrant a visit.
If I qualify for additional sacks, how many can I put out each week?
Requests are assessed on a case by case basis and you will be notified of how many additional sacks you qualify for.
What if I have 2 children in nappies or a medical condition that results in more than 2 sacks?
Again, log your request on 0300 330 7000 and a member of staff will be in touch to assess your situation and advise how best to reduce your waste.
Will this affect my collection day?
Does that mean that you’re collecting less waste from my house?
No. The overall amount of waste will not change. But it should mean that most households recycle more.
What colour boxes should I use to recycle?
All residents have been issued with plastic recycling boxes. These should be put out at the same time as your
new GREEN sacks:
• Blue: plastics, cans, tins, aerosols
• Green: paper, cardboard (up to the size of a cereal box), cartons
• Black: glass (eg bottles and jars)
• Brown caddie: food waste

What if I’ve lost my recycling boxes?
Please contact Northampton Borough Council (details below), who will issue you with new boxes.
Alternatively, you may use your own containers as long as the recycling is clearly separated.
