Discounts and exemptions

  • Newly-built properties and properties requiring major or structural repair work will be charged 100% Council Tax whilst unoccupied.
  • Unoccupied and unfurnished properties will be charged 100% Council Tax from the date the property becomes vacant.
  • Furnished and unoccupied properties, including second homes, will be charged 100% Council Tax from the day the property becomes unoccupied.
  • A long-term empty property premium of 100% will be payable for properties continually vacant for over 2 years and from 1 April 2020 a premium of 200% will be payable where a property has been empty and unfurnished for more than five years

These changes provide us with an opportunity to bring empty properties back into use earlier, and therefore will help address the shortage of housing stock in the local area.
