Funding to build new homes
Published Wednesday 9th September 09
Northampton Borough Council has been awarded more than £450,000 by the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency following a successful bid to build new, affordable homes in the town.
Northampton's success was announced by Housing Minister John Healey MP on Thursday 9 September, and the town is one of 47 authorities that will now receive money for new housing schemes.
The £451,913 funding will allow Northampton Borough Council to work with Orbit Group, to build eight new, family-sized homes on a derelict garage site on Woodside Way, King's Heath.
The site was chosen from a potential list of 13 and as well as providing new homes, it has the added benefit of improving an area that has been targeted by anti-social behaviour and so a source of on-going concern to other local residents.
The Homes and Communities Agency was particularly complimentary about the quality of the bid put forward by Northampton Borough Council.
Councillor Sally Beardsworth, Northampton Borough Council Cabinet Member for Housing, said: "This is really great news for Northampton. We put in a strong case to build these new family homes in an area that really needs them. I am delighted to hear that it has been successful. This is part of our commitment to providing better places for people to live and this is the first time for many years that the Council has been able to build new homes."
Northampton Borough Council has a housing stock of 12,500 homes and is currently working on a number of projects to ensure that all its tenants have homes that are of a high standard and investing wherever possible to meet the Government's targets on improving homes and neighbourhoods.
Orbit Group is one of the Council's preferred development partners and has been operating in the Northampton area for over 20 years. Orbit owns 1,500 homes in the area, which are managed from their Northampton office based in the borough.
Paul High, Group Business Development Director said: "We are delighted to be working with Northampton Borough Council as the development partner on this project. Orbit's ambition is to Build Brighter Futures so we are excited to be providing high quality family homes in the area."
The homes will be up and ready for occupation by Spring 2011.
