Council to consider land development at Sixfields
Published Friday 31st July 09
This week Councillors will discuss the future of Sixfields Stadium and surrounding land.
A report going to Northampton Borough Council's Cabinet will recommend that the Council starts work with Northampton Town Football Club and Homes & Communities Agency on a deal that could lead to the redevelopment of the land around Sixfields.
If approved, the Council would start negotiations to draw up a Development Agreement for the area. This could help to support the football club's aspirations to redevelop the stadium.
Any redevelopment of part of the Stadium complex would be subject to three conditions. The development does not conflict with the town centre. Sixfields Stadium continues to be used as a football stadium. Any replacement athletics facilities are built to a UK Athletics Competition Standard within Northampton.
Councillor David Perkins, Northampton Borough Council cabinet member for finance said: "There is an opportunity for us to make real progress in redeveloping the land around Sixfields. This report recommends a way forward that will see everyone benefit.
"We have always supported the aspirations of the football club to improve their stadium. This way forward could help them to achieve this, without in the process creating something that would place further stress on our town centre during these difficult economic times."
Councillors will discuss the report: "Sixfields - Development Agreement" at a meeting of the Council's Cabinet on Wednesday 5 August. For more details of the agenda and details of the meeting please visit the Council's website www.northampton.gov.uk/meetings.
