Making a splash in the Market Square

Published Wednesday 8th July 09

Visitors to Northampton town centre could soon find the Market Square is the best place to make a splash as proposals are unveiled to create a fountain.

The proposed fountain was announced by Northampton Borough Council today (Wednesday 17 June) at a meeting with market traders. The new fountain would become a feature of the Abington Street entrance to the Market Square, with jets of cool water spraying into the air from the ground.

Earlier this year people were asked what they thought of plans to change the Market Square. One of the features most requested in the consultation was a water feature, so this idea has been included as a proposal for the entrance to the Market.

Work on the Market Square started in March and has already seen the creation of a new large events area which is set to host a celebration of motor sports this weekend. The ongoing project is now looking at improving the main entrance to become a welcoming place for shoppers and visitors to meet, rest and enjoy.

Councillor Richard Church, Northampton Borough Council cabinet member for regeneration said: "The Market Square is the heart of our town centre and regeneration work is already creating a new energy. There is still a lot of work to do, and I am delighted to share our ideas for the entrance with the traders today.

"I want to see the Market Square become a place for everyone. The entrance is where people form their first impression of the area, and perhaps the town centre as a whole. So what we are proposing will see the entrance to the Market become a welcoming area for people to spend time and relax."

Full details of the scheme will be published later this year when a planning application is submitted to WNDC. If approved, work could start on the proposed fountain as early as January next year.
