Guided tours of the Guildhall
Published Wednesday 4th August 10
As part of Northampton's summer long Shoe Town Festival, the Guildhall will be opening its doors to the public for a series of guided tours.
Built at the height of the Gothic revival in 1864 by the celebrated architect Edward W Godwin, the Guildhall is a striking example of Victorian architecture.
Over the years the building has been added to sympathetically and is remarkably still the seat of local government and municipal services.
Kaleidoscopic stained glass windows, colourful murals, ornate archways and mouldings, exquisite carvings, a courtroom, dungeons and holding cells are just some of the building's breathtaking and bizarre features.
A limited number of tickets, priced £2, are still available for the tours on 1, 2 and 3 September, which run from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. The number of stairs in the Guildhall means that the tours are not suitable for people with walking difficulties.
To book call Northampton Museums on (01604) 838111.
