How to become a Borough Councillor
Borough Council elections are held across all wards in May every 4 years (next election May 2011).
Candidate must be 21 years old or over, on the electoral register, and have lived , worked or owned property in the Borough for at least the 12 months prior to nomination.
You may be disqualified as a candidate if you work for the Council or hold a politically restricted post with another authority. Bankruptcy or a criminal conviction with a three-month or more prison sentence would also disqualify you as a candidate.
Most candidates are nominated through political parties. However, individuals are welcome to stand in their own right. Before you can be accepted as a candidate you must get one person to agree to propose your nomination, another person to agree to second the proposal and a further 8 people to assent the nomination form, all of which must be fully registered in the ward for which you are proposing to become a candidate.
Information and nomination packs are available from the Electoral Services Office approximately 3 months prior to an election.
Further details on becoming a Councillor can be found on the Electoral Commission website
