Asbestos in the Workplace
Asbestos - Introduction
Asbestos is a natural mineral and has been used in building construction for a number of years because of its fire retardant properties. New properties are built with asbestos substitutes. Normally asbestos does not give rise to health problems if it is in good condition, however, if it is damaged, broken, drilled, cut or sanded small fibres can be released that can give rise to long-term health problems.
The owner of a building has a legal duty for managing the building with a new Code of Practice coming into effect on 21 May 2004. A competent person should conduct any necessary work to meet the requirements of the new regulations.
