Asbestos in Domestic Premises

Asbestos - Introduction

Asbestos is a natural mineral and has been used in building construction for a number of years because of its fire retardant properties. New properties are built with asbestos substitutes. Normally asbestos does not give rise to health problems if it is in good condition, however, if it is damaged, broken, drilled, cut or sanded small fibres can be released that can give rise to long-term health problems.

If work is conducted by contractors in your home, for example builders, which involves asbestos, then requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002 will apply to their work activities. This work is not enforced by officers from Northampton Borough Council, but by officers from the Health and Safety Executive.

If you conduct any work yourself within your home involving asbestos, then this health and safety legislation does not apply, however you still have a duty to work safely. The Council has a site were asbestos cement material can be taken to for its safe disposal.

Council tenants should contact the Council's Housing Technical Services Team on 01604 838251 for any concerns with suspected asbestos, or any works concerning suspected asbestos-containing materials .

We have compiled a list of contacts should you require further information.
