Northampton Borough Council

Licence - alcohol and entertainment

The Licensing Act 2003 came into effect on 24th November 2005 when the responsibility for liquor licensing transferred from the Magistrates Courts to the Local Authorities.

The primary purpose of this new Act was to bring the sale of alcohol, regulated entertainment (i.e plays, cinema, films, public entertainment, dancing etc) and late night refreshment licences under one new Licence in the form of either a Premises Licence or Club Premises Certificate and to provide a focus on the promotion of four statutory objectives: The Prevention of Crime and Disorder, Public Safety, The Prevention of Public Nuisance and The Protection of Children from Harm.
