More Information for tenants

Benefits

The Government has changed the way we work out and pay Housing Benefit for some private tenants from 7 April 2008. By 'private tenant' we mean somebody who rents their home from a private landlord.

Deposit Bond Scheme

To help prevent people in this situation becoming homeless the council has developed the Deposit Bond Scheme. It is run by the Private Sector Housing Solutions Team (PSHS).

Tenancy Deposit Protection

Tenancy deposit law was introduced on 6th April 2007 and provides protection for tenants by preventing landlords and letting agents from unfairly withholding a deposit.

Renting privately

There are various types of private rented accommodation available in Northampton.

Immigration clearance

Applicants from some countries who wish to visit or live permanently in the UK are usually required by their own country's British High Commission or British Embassy to provide a letter from  the relevant local council stating that they wish to live in that area.
