Virtually Shoes Project
Our ‘Virtually Shoes Project’ will enable the museum to digitise over 15,000 designated shoes in the collection.
This will create a publically accessible online catalogue, featuring at least six high quality images along with data for each shoe.
That’s nearly 100,000 shoe images to explore!
will enable more people to access one of the world’s biggest shoe collections. It
will provide an opportunity for new audiences across the UK and the World such
as designers, shoe companies, students, academics and those interested in shoes
to use, experience and be inspired by our collections.
As a result we can better care for our collections and provide easier access for our researchers. We will also have good high resolution images for use in publications.
The project will run until March 2018 when the catalogue will launch.
Funded by Arts Council England.
What will we be doing over the next year?
- Volunteers will be improving all of our catalogue entries on all 15,000 shoes
- We will be devising and developing an on-line cataloguing system
- We will update our glossary of shoe terminology and share this with other collections across the world
Our pages are updated bi-weekly for #TuesdayShoesday and #FootCandyFriday.
Further updates from staff and volunteers working on the project can also be found on our Museum blog page.
We could not complete this project without the help of our amazing army of volunteers. We are currently recruiting for Cataloguing Assistant and Collections Archivist volunteer roles - if you love shoes and would like to help us, find out how you can get involved.
Thank you to all of you who helped with our consultation. We are now developing a cataloguing template based on feedback.
